Campaign for Sustainable Overreactions

CSO Program

Tantrum Footprint Calculator

Estimate the CO₂e of your last meltdown. Decibels. Duration. Slammed-door count.

The Problem

You cannot manage what you do not measure. The Campaign's research team has spent six years developing a peer-reviewed methodology to convert qualitative meltdown attributes (volume, duration, profanity volume, door-slam count) into a single, comparable carbon-equivalent number.

How It Works

1

Recall the incident

Think back to the most recent overreaction you remember clearly. Honesty improves accuracy; the calculator does not transmit your inputs to a server.

2

Enter the four metrics

Decibels (peak), duration in minutes, slammed door count, and profanity count. Default values are based on the suburban-quartile mean if you are unsure.

3

Receive your footprint

The calculator returns a kg CO₂e estimate, a driving-distance equivalent, and (if applicable) a recommended Verified Outrage Offsets™ purchase.

Default values reflect the suburban-quartile mean. Adjust to match your incident.

Methodology (v4.2)

The Tantrum Footprint methodology converts qualitative incident attributes into kg CO₂e using the formula:kg CO₂e = (dB × 0.01) + (minutes × 0.05) + (slammedDoors × 0.4) + (profanity × 0.02)Coefficients are calibrated against the Campaign's 2024 incident registry (n = 8,400) and reviewed annually. Driving-distance equivalents use the EPA's standard passenger-vehicle CO₂e factor.

First time I ran the calculator I logged a 14 kg footprint. The driving-distance equivalent was 35 miles. I was sober for that calculation. I have not exceeded 3 kg since.

I run the calculator weekly as a self-audit. The version 4.2 inputs are far more sensitive to door-slam count than v3.8. This is a welcome correction.

I require my entire PTA executive team to run the calculator before every quarterly meeting. We share results. We have a leaderboard. Last quarter I was last, in a good way.

I have logged my last 47 sermons through the calculator. The footprints are small but non-zero. The Campaign has confirmed sermons count.

We integrate the calculator into our team retros. Each engineer logs their week's footprint. Trends are reviewed in 1:1s. People appreciate the visibility.

The methodology document is 84 pages. I have read all 84. It is the most rigorous self-assessment instrument in the wellness sector.

The UI is uncluttered. The result page is beautifully typeset. I have run the calculator just to look at the result page.

Logged a 6 kg footprint after the parking ticket. The calculator told me I drove the equivalent of 14 miles in pure rage. I bought offsets immediately.
